Mango Yogurt Bites: A Snack That Doesn't Stop Being Good For You After Childhood
Most dried mango on UK shelves comes with a sugar coating or syrup soak to counter its tartness. Ours doesn't need one — Greek yogurt, real mango, and a touch of lychee, with nothing added. Here's why it's one of the few snacks in the cupboard that works just as well for the adults as it does for the kids.
Check the ingredients on most "dried mango" or mango snack packs and you'll usually find sugar or glucose syrup somewhere near the top — mango on its own can be tart once dried, so most producers sweeten it to compensate. It's an easy habit to miss, because the fruit itself still does the marketing on the front of the pack.
Next time you pick up a "mango" snack, look for sugar, glucose syrup, or fruit juice concentrate anywhere in the first few ingredients. It's one of the most common ways a naturally tart fruit gets turned into a much sweeter product than the fruit itself actually is.
A snack shouldn't need sugar added to make the fruit taste like itself. — Lyo Bite
What's in a Mango Yogurt Bite
Greek yogurt
Strained for a thicker, more concentrated base — more protein per spoon than standard yogurt, for the same reason.
Mango
Real mango, not flavouring or concentrate — carrying its own natural sweetness.
Lychee
A smaller addition that rounds out the sweetness naturally, with no added sugar needed.
That's the full list. No rice flour, no wheat, no maltodextrin, no added sugar or syrup of any kind — just the three ingredients above, freeze-dried without heat.
- Sweetness from mango & lychee only
- No syrup, no added sugar
- Greek yogurt base
- Often sugar or syrup coated
- Sweetened to offset tartness
- Real yogurt content often minor
Why Greek yogurt specifically
Greek yogurt is strained to remove much of its whey, which is what gives it a thicker texture and a more concentrated protein content than standard yogurt for the same volume. It's also a source of calcium and vitamin B12. Live cultures are naturally part of any yogurt, Greek included — freeze-drying is gentler on those cultures than baking or frying would be, since it never exposes the yogurt to heat, though we haven't independently lab-tested culture viability in the finished bites, so we're not making a specific probiotic claim on the strength of that alone.
What mango brings to the bite
Mango is a source of vitamin C and vitamin A, along with fibre — it's one of the more nutrient-dense fruits for its natural sweetness, which is part of why it works so well as the main flavour here without needing anything added to it. That natural sugar content is also exactly why freeze-drying suits it: no heat means less of that vitamin C is lost in processing than it would be with an oven-dried or candied version.
What lychee brings — for kids and adults alike
Lychee is particularly well known for its vitamin C content and its high water content when fresh, which is part of what gives it a naturally juicy sweetness before it's ever freeze-dried. It's a fruit that works the same way nutritionally whether it's a toddler or an adult reaching for the bite — there's no different "adult" or "child" version of what lychee brings to the mix, which is part of the point of this snack generally.
Not just a kids' snack
Most of what we make is aimed squarely at little hands, but Mango Yogurt Bites are one of the flavours that works just as well pulled out of a desk drawer or a gym bag as it does out of a toddler's snack pot. Real Greek yogurt for protein, real fruit for natural sweetness, nothing added — that's not a formula that stops being a good idea once you turn 18.
Why it melts, not crunches
Freeze-drying removes water by sublimation — ice turning straight to vapour, without heat and without ever passing through a liquid stage. That keeps the structure light and porous rather than baked solid, which is why a Mango Yogurt Bite starts with a light snap and dissolves quickly in the mouth, rather than needing sustained chewing.
Shaped like a snowflake, on purpose
Sized for small hands
Each bite is around 2.5cm across, deliberately sized rather than left to however the mixture happens to break apart.
Textured for grip
The snowflake's points give toddlers something to pinch and grip, supporting the pincer grasp.
Consistent across the range
The same shape and logo run through every Lyo Bite flavour and line, from Mango through to the Cheese Bites.
Made in the UK
Every batch of Mango Yogurt Bites is mixed, portioned, and freeze-dried in our own UK facility — nothing outsourced, nothing arriving pre-made.
Frequently asked questions
Are yogurt bites good for toddlers?
Made from Greek yogurt, mango, and lychee, with no added sugar and no starch fillers, Mango Yogurt Bites are a clean-label alternative to many shop-bought yogurt melts. As with any snack, they're one part of a varied diet rather than a meal replacement.
What age can babies eat yogurt melts?
Always follow the age guidance printed on the pack and introduce any new food texture gradually. If you're unsure whether your baby or toddler is ready for small, dissolvable snacks, your health visitor or GP can advise based on your child's own feeding stage.
How much sugar is in yogurt melts?
It varies hugely by brand, and many mango or fruit-yogurt snacks add sugar or syrup specifically to offset the tartness of drying fruit. Our Mango Yogurt Bites have no added sugar at all — sweetness comes from the mango and lychee themselves, and from the yogurt's own natural milk sugars.
Can adults eat yogurt bites too, or are they just for kids?
There's nothing in the recipe that's toddler-specific — it's Greek yogurt and real fruit, with no added sugar, which works as a snack at any age. The 2.5cm snowflake shape and size are designed with small hands in mind, but the ingredients themselves suit anyone looking for a quick, protein-carrying, no-added-sugar snack.
What's the difference between yogurt melts and Yogurt Bites?
"Yogurt melts" is a generic term used across the market for products built on very different bases — some real yogurt, many a sugar-and-starch coating. Yogurt Bites is our name for a version built from real Greek yogurt, not a flavoured shell.
Do Mango Yogurt Bites contain allergens?
Yes — they contain dairy, since Greek yogurt is a core ingredient, so they're not suitable for anyone avoiding milk or dairy products. Always check the ingredient label for the most current allergen information before giving them to a child with any known allergy.
Are freeze-dried yogurt snacks a choking hazard for young children?
As with any small, dissolvable food given to babies or toddlers, always supervise mealtimes, follow the age guidance on the pack, and introduce new textures gradually. If you have any concerns about your child's readiness for a particular texture, speak with your health visitor or GP before offering it.
